My father and step-mother are in town from Georgia. I picked them up from the Wilmington International Airport earlier today and it has got to be the smallest “legitimate” airport I have ever seen in my entire life. It was kind of adorable, really.
Thus far we’ve had a great weekend and being around my folks has made me realize how much I miss living within a day’s drive of them (they are roughly 10 hours away and that isn’t a feasible trek with a toddler unless you break it into two days or want to end the day in a drunken stupor in order to forget the wretchedness you have experienced over the course of the past 24 hours). I was last in Georgia at the end of 2012 and will likely not be back until the end of this year or maybe even some time in 2014. It’s kind of weird to be so far away but at the same time I’ve lived much, much further away (Vermont), just not for this long of a time. It’s also the most annoying distance you could ever conceive… A 10 hour drive is “short” enough to leave them within reach but long enough to prevent you from attempting such a trip if you’re going solo with a small child. It’s not quite long enough to warrant a plane flight for most occasions though. Apparently my dad and step-mom’s flight wasn’t even long enough tor each altitude.
Anyway. We will be skeet shooting and kayaking tomorrow. After spending the past week dodging tornadoes (one a half mile wide in our county on Monday morning!) and other big storms the weather is supposed to be spectacular so it’s shaping up to be a nice, leisurely weekend.
Lots of alcohol and family bonding, just the way I like it!
